This painting highlights the brilliant color of the azalea bushes in a North Little Rock, Arkansas, community. When I participated in a plein air workshop with an artist mentor in my hometown of Little Rock, we ventured into an old, historic neighborhood to paint the massive oak trees scattered among the quaint little homes.
After I finished the first painting, I turned around to see the most colorful row of azaleas I’d seen all year! How did I miss those bright pinks before? This painting is about color; it has value and composition as well, but I wanted the bright colors to catch the eye first.

Little Rock native Kristen Hess has been taken captive by the rich colors and thick textures of oil paints since 2005. Her work combines the effect of light on her subjects with expressive brushstrokes, creating movement and depth in her pieces. Her representational style along with an extensive background in drawing come together with the atmospheric colors of the impressionists to create paintings that capture the emotion of the place or subject.
