This painting features a typical scene in the streets of a slum in Florianópolis, Brazil, with horse-drawn wagons, houses made of tin and beautiful mountains in the background. Unfortunately, this part of the city caught all the water runoff from the rains, often leaving many homes destroyed and people stranded without food or water. Although at times neglected by many, several local churches and non-profits seek to help the people living in Frei Damião.
I have been honored to spend many months in this place and love all the warm Brazilians that brought me into their homes and lives, taught me Portuguese, prayed with me, and showed me how to have enormous faith.
Little Rock native Kristen Hess has been taken captive by the rich colors and thick textures of oil paints since 2005. Her work combines the effect of light on her subjects with expressive brushstrokes, creating movement and depth in her pieces. Her representational style along with an extensive background in drawing come together with the atmospheric colors of the impressionists to create paintings that capture the emotion of the place or subject.
